UN investigation finds flaws in CAR operation
The United Nations says an investigation into a 2015 arrest attempt that left one peacekeeper dead has determined there were flaws in the planning and execution of the operation.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that peacekeepers were attempting to carry out an arrest warrant issued by Central African Republic authorities on Aug. 2 and 3 when one peacekeeper from Cameroon was killed and a number of others were injured.11
He said two civilians were killed in the violent demonstrations that erupted following the operation but the investigation was unable to establish the origin of the shots that killed them.
Investigators made a number of recommendations including changes to the peacekeeping forces’ operation and reporting structure and improvements to review and execution of arrest warrants, Dujarric said.
