He would have got away if it wasn’t for that meddling police helicopter

KELOWNA – An unlucky thief was caught red-handed hiding in a doorway in Kelowna this afternoon when a police helicopter that just happened to be passing by helped thwart his escape from Orchard Park Shopping Centre.

Sometime after 3 p.m., Dec. 14, the loss prevention officers at Orchard Park Mall chased a man they believed was carrying a backpack full of stolen items from the Bay.

When they were unable to catch him, they notified police who had some serious backup at their disposal.

“It just so happens the helicopter was coming back from Big White,” Cpl. Joe Duncan says.

The man was located within 15 minutes of the helicopter arriving on scene.

“They caught the guy hiding in a door well somewhere,” Duncan says.

Duncan could not confirm where the man was found.
