Grass fire at Ajax site quickly contained
A small grass fire about two kilometres east of Jacko Lake was contained just before noon today.
The land where the fire started is owned by KGHM Ajax Mining Inc and is in the area where the proposed open pit gold and copper mine would be located.
Community relations specialist Robin Bartlett says regular work was being performed in the area but couldn't say what caused the blaze shortly after 11 a.m.
“We continue to do our normal EA (environmental assessment) detecting, but I'm not sure what was going on this morning,” she said.
Firefighters are on scene and assessing the situation this afternoon.
The fire started in area just a few kilometres south of the Aberdeen area and was contained to just a couple hectares. Kamloops fire crews were on hand to help contain the blaze and to ensure the fire was not threatening the city.
