Canada’s Jennifer Jones rebounds for 7-1 rout of China at world championship

SAPPORO, Japan – Canada rebounded from its first loss at the women’s world curling championship by stealing six points in a 7-1 rout of China on Monday.

Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones scored a deuce in the third end and then added singles in four of the next five to improve the Canadians’ record to 3-1. The two countries didn’t play the final two ends.

The Chinese had entered the match undefeated and now also have a 3-1 record.

“We went in and wanted to get comfortable with the ice by simplifying things a little bit in the first end,” said Jones. “They let us do that, so that was nice, and the second end, we made an aggressive call on Kaitlyn’s (Lawes) shot and ended up with the steal, which was nice.”

The defending Olympic champion got a good performance from lead Dawn McEwen, who shot 88 per cent.

China’s skip Sijia Liu countered by shooting 74 per cent, with its only scoring coming in the sixth end.

In other draw six action, Scotland beat the United States 9-2, Denmark slipped past Switzerland 8-7 and Germany downed Finland 7-5.

Canada will get a break before facing Russia in draw eight.

“We’ve played them (Russia) a lot, we know they’re a great team and we know they’re playing really well here— we’ll have to play our best to beat them,” said Jones. “Hopefully we carry what we did here into tonight.”
