State-run agency: Turkish artillery return fire at Syria for fourth day after mortar lands

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey’s state-run news agency says Turkish artillery have returned fire at Syria for a fourth straight day after a mortar shell land near a border village.

The Anadolu Agency says the mortar landed in a rural area near the village of Guvecci, in Hatay province on Saturday during intense fighting between the forces of Bashar Assad’s regime and the opposition forces in Syria’s Idlib province. Turkish troops near Guvecci immediately responded with “counter-fire,” the agency said.

Turkish artillery has been responding to shelling from Syria since Wednesday, when a mortar landed at a Turkish border, killing five civilians.

Turkey’s parliament on Thursday also voted to allow cross border military operations in Syria, further escalating tensions between the neighbours.
