Cleveland hot dog diner whose exterior is in ‘Drew Carey’ opening credits is destroyed by fire

CLEVELAND – A popular Cleveland hot dog joint whose exterior is shown briefly in the opening credits of “The Drew Carey Show” has been demolished after a fire.

The fire at Steve’s Lunch began around dinnertime Tuesday. Employees tell local media that a grease fire in the kitchen quickly spread to the rest of the building.

No injuries were reported.

The 24/7 diner opened in the 1950s. The diner attracted celebrities including Drew Carey, George Clooney and Bill Cosby during its 60-year run.

Co-owner Ed Salzgerber tells The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/1HZC1Wh) that the atmosphere and history of the diner led him to buy it in 2002.
