Kamloops family homeless after Boxing Day townhouse fire

KAMLOOPS – A townhouse fire in Kamloops early this morning has left a family of four without a home, but no one was hurt.

Fire crews were called to the Glenwood townhouse complex in the 1600-block of Greenfield Avenue at about 6:40 a.m., Dec. 26, and arrived to find flames shooting out of the roof of one of the units, according to Platoon Capt. Steve Kilmartin.

He says a man and two children were safely out of the unit when crews arrived, adding the man’s wife was at work.

Kilmartin says the man tried to put out the fire before calling 911.

“It started in the upstairs master bedroom closet,” he says. “He did try to put it out, went back with more water and found it had already grown too big. He got the kids out and phoned the fire department.”

Kilmartin says there is extensive damage to the bedrooms on the second floor and smoke damage on the main floor.

The family of four is temporarily homeless and in the care of Emergency Social Services, he says.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
