Former TV reporter Ron Bencze fights four-year sex-assault sentence

VANCOUVER – A former Vancouver television news reporter is appealing his four-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a child.

Lawyers for 45-year-old former Global TV reporter Ron Bencze (BEN’-zee) say a provincial court judge in Surrey, B.C., imposed a demonstrably unfit sentence that is outside the acceptable range.

Bencze pleaded guilty in July to one count of sexual assault involving years of attacks on a now-14-year-old boy.

Several remaining charges against Bencze were stayed.

The Crown wanted a three-year sentence while the defence requested a conditional sentence of up to two years.

Judge Robin Baird rejected those requests when sentence was imposed in late August. (CKNW)
