Cool, white week ahead in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – If you were hoping back to school would be warmer than this past weekend you are in luck — temperatures will warm slightly this week, but not by much.

After several days of temperatures staying well below seasonal normal lows, overnight temperatures are expected to be back near, if not a bit warmer than, the -8 Celsius that is typical at this time of year.

During the day the mercury will stay a bit lower than the normal seasonal high of -1 C though, with a high of just -7 C expected today, Jan. 4. Tuesday and Wednesday a high of -4 C is expected while Thursday should reach -3 C and Friday will be a bit cooler, with a high of just -6 C in the forecast.

Along with the cooler temperatures we can expect some snow to fall this week, with four to six centimetres expected today and then at least a chance of flurries the rest of the week.

Drive B.C. is reporting highways as having sections of compact snow and slippery sections, along with blowing snow on Highway 1 from Monte Creek through the Shuswap and in the North Okanagan. Fog is being reported on Highway 97C near Kelowna as well.

If you have some time off and were hoping to hit the backcountry this week, the avalanche risk is considered low to moderate throughout the region, according to Avalanche Canada.
