In the United States, there were more than 70 proposals to name a state symbol in 2015. Here are some of the more unique categories and the nominees:

ALASKA: hostess, Miss Alaska

CONNECTICUT: pioneering aircraft, Gustave Whitehead’s Number 21

FLORIDA: honey, Tupelo honey

KANSAS: stone bridge capital, Cowley County

KENTUCKY: cycling capital of the commonwealth, London

MAINE: maritime sloop, Friendship sloop

MASSACHUSETTS: Tai Chi form, Five Elements Tai Chi

MISSOURI: “wonder dog,” Jim the Wonder Dog

NEW JERSEY: inventor, Thomas Alva Edison

OHIO: rock song, “Hang On Sloopy”

TENNESSEE: firearm, Barrett Model 82A1 Rifle

VERMONT: vegetable, Gilfeather turnip

WYOMING: legendary creature, the jackalope
