National Arts Centre has 10 shows in new English theatre season

OTTAWA – “The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God” and “Twelfth Night” are among the shows in the National Arts Centre’s upcoming English theatre season.

The season kicks off in October with “The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God” by Governor General’s Literary Award-winning playwright Djanet Sears.

It features a cast of 21 and is set in fictional Negro Creek, Ont., where Rainey Johnson is grieving for her daughter.

Meanwhile, artistic director Jillian Keiley will helm the production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” by Calgary’s Old Trout Puppet Workshop in January.

It’s touted as “an animated interpretation of Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before.”

A total of 10 shows will be in the 2015/16 season.

Others include Colleen Murphy’s “The December Man” (L’homme de decembre), about a man who survived the 1989 Montreal Massacre. It will run in November.

“Anne of Green Gables” sequel “Anne & Gilbert” will run in December, depicting the protagonist as a budding teacher.

“Belles Soeurs: The Musical,” an English-language adaptation of the Michel Tremblay play, is set for April 2016.

The lineup also includes “Jack Charles V The Crown,” “Concord Floral,” “I Am For You,” “Snow Angel” and Rick Miller’s one-man show “BOOM.”
