Vernon mom says break-in happened while daughters were home alone

VERNON – A local mother says her daughers were home alone when someone broke into their home and she is now pleading with the alleged thief to return what was stolen from her house. 

‘To the people who broke into my home last night with my girls upstairs…. you stole from two single moms trying to make it work for our kids,’ Kris Zacharuk posted on Facebook Tuesday morning. 

Her daughters are 17 and 12 years old. Also in the home at the time was her roommate’s 12-year-old daughter.

Zacharuk said the break-in happened between 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. while she was getting picked up from the airport, on her way home from B.C. Children’s hospital with her son.

Among the items stolen was a laptop containing her son’s make a wish trip pictures, his medical information and his schoolwork, Zacharuk said.

“We can't afford to replace the other stuff. We have three very traumatized girls and two moms who didn't sleep at all last night,” she said.

On a GoFundMe page, Zacharuk said police attended and spent two hours looking for evidence.

Zacharuk has publicly asked that the culprit return the items and leave them on her doorstep, ‘no questions asked.’
