Sara Bareilles musical and Mark Rylance highlight upcoming American Repertory Theater season

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sara Bareilles’ musical based on the film “Waitress,” a play co-written and starring Mark Rylance and a stage adaptation of Eve Ensler’s “In the Body of the World” are among the highlights of the American Repertory Theater’s upcoming season.

The powerhouse theatre company at Harvard said Thursday it will produce the world premiere of “Waitress, with music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated Bareilles, starting in August. It will be directed by Diane Paulus, the artistic director, who has also helmed the recent revival of “Pippin” and the new “Finding Neverland.”

The season also includes “Nice Fish,” a play about two men fishing on a lake in frozen Minnesota written by Rylance and Louis Jenkins, and the world premiere of Ensler’s 2013 memoir starring Ensler and directed by Paulus.

The company will also present the musical “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812”; “1984,” a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s novel by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan; and “The Pirate Princess,” a new musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” for children.
