Los Angeles museums announce plans for 2016 career retrospective of Robert Mapplethorpe’s work
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Two major museums in Los Angeles announced plans to launch a career retrospective of art photographer Robert Mapplethorpe’s work next year.
The J. Paul Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art said Thursday the exhibition will open simultaneously in March at both venues.
From there, it will travel to venues in Montreal, Sydney and a third, yet-to-be-announced international destination.
The show will examine the erotic, sometimes controversial work of the photographer from its beginnings until his death.
Officials say it will include Mapplethorpe’s most famous images as well as lesser known works. Early drawings, sculptures, Polaroid photos and rare videos and colour photos will also be included.
The works are drawn from a joint Getty-LACMA acquisition of Mapplethorpe’s archives.
The artist died in 1989 at age 42.
