PENTICTON – The man at the centre of a police incident at Cherry Lane Mall on Jan. 3 made a court appearance today, Jan. 8.
Danny Douglas Ross appeared by video in Penticton Provincial Court facing charges of assault, possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, and willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, stemming from the incident in which Ross allegedly assaulted a mall patron and threatened others, including police, with a pair of scissors.
Crown Prosecutor Vern Frolick told court preliminary psychiatric assessments found Ross to be a habitual drug user who becomes psychotic with drug use.
Ross behaved erratically as his case was discussed, at times scowling, making threatening remarks and at one point lying down on a bench.
Ross was committed to a 30-day psychiatric assessment at Port Coquitlam Forensic Hospital, as soon as accommodation at the institution is possible.
