‘Preparation for the Next Life’ wins PEN/Faulkner Award

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A debut novel, Atticus Lish’s “Preparation for the Next Life,” has won the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction.

Lish will receive $15,000, the PEN/Faulkner foundation announced Tuesday. His multicultural love story was praised by the award’s judges for “humanizing” the struggles for the “yearning, huddled masses.”

The other four finalists, who include Emily St. John Mandel and Jennifer Clement, will each receive $5,000.

Previous winners include Philip Roth, John Updike and Ann Patchett.
