Montenegrin parliament chooses speaker, month after election

PODGORICA, Montenegro – Montenegrin lawmakers have chosen a parliament speaker in a step toward forming a government, more than a month after tense elections in the Balkan country.

Parliament on Thursday elected Social Democrat Ivan Brajovic, signalling a future coalition of the party with the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists.

The governing party of long-ruling Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic won most votes in the Oct. 16 election but must seek a coalition with smaller and minority groups.

The election was marked by an alleged foiled coup attempt orchestrated by anti-NATO nationalists, including two Russians. Prosecutors have said plotters planned to assassinate Djukanovic and take over power, to stop Montenegro from entering NATO.

Russia has denied involvement. But Moscow has openly opposed its historic Slavic ally’s membership in the Western alliance.
