Christine Sinclair’s four-game suspension wasn’t for comments to media

Christine Sinclair’s four-game suspension was for post-game comments to a match official, not for her public critique of referee Christiana Pedersen.

Canada’s women’s soccer captain was handed a four-game suspension by FIFA last Friday for her actions after a dramatic semifinal loss to the United States at the London Olympics.

Sinclair was vocal in her criticism of Pedersen’s officiating, but FIFA’s ruling said the suspension was for “displaying unsporting behaviour towards match officials after the match.”

Sinclair was also fined 3,000 Swiss francs (C$3,152), plus 500 Swiss francs (C$525) as a processing fee.

The 29-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., spoke to reporters on a conference call today, saying she had no regrets for her comments after the game.

She’ll serve her suspension early in 2013.
