Tulsa police: Officers fatally shoot axe-wielding man

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa police say officers fatally shot a man who confronted them with an axe and ignored commands to drop the weapon.

Police said in a news release Tuesday that officers Richard Urban and Jerod Lum both opened fire at 56-year-old Jerry Brimer, killing Brimer Monday evening.

Sgt. Shane Tuell earlier told reporters the officers were responding to a home where a woman reported her husband was threatening her.

Tuell says the officers encountered Brimer in the street and he began making suicidal statements and approached the officers with the axe before they opened fire.

Both officers are now on paid leave.

The shooting comes a day after Tulsa police fatally shot a man who threw a knife at an officer who tried unsuccessfully to use a Taser to subdue him.
