The Helen Mirren-led play ‘The Audience’ recoups its $3.4M investment on Broadway

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth has once more hit gold — “The Audience” has recouped.

Producers of the West End transfer said Monday that the play that imagines the private weekly meetings between the monarch and Britain’s prime ministers has earned back its $3.4 million costs in just eight weeks. Mirren has already earned success for portraying the queen in the movie “The Queen.”

Peter Morgan’s play highlights meetings with eight prime ministers, with Mirren switching from age 25 with Winston Churchill to today’s PM, David Cameron.

Other new shows that have recouped include “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” ”It’s Only a Play” and “The River.” Traditionally, only about 3 in 10 Broadway shows recoup.
