Naramata support group waits for word on Syrian refugees; focuses on funding

PENTICTON – While the Naramata Refugee Support Initiative waits to hear about the arrival of Syrian refugees, the group is working on the financial aspect of housing the new citizens at the Naramata Centre.

Support initiative spokesperson Laura Gray says the group still has no concrete information on if, when or how many refugees can be expected in Naramata, but the group is continuing to make the necessary arrangements for them nonetheless.

“Government assisted refugees are now arriving into the Vancouver area." Gray says in a media release. "We know other South Okanagan groups are also preparing for arrivals, however these other groups have sponsored refugees, where we would be receiving government funded refugees.”

Gray says the Naramata initiative is attempting to sort out complexities of how to best receive donations from the public to help the refugees meet their basic needs.

“We are hoping to partner with a local charitable group for the financial piece, as well as create an easy online donation system with tax receipts available,” she says. The group hopes to soon be able to collect local donations.

The refugees will need assistance setting up households, additional clothing will be needed for all family members, and assistance getting children into schools and receiving care from Interior Health are other things that need to be considered.

Gray says the South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services Society will also play an important role as part of these refugees’ support network.

She says volunteers have already prepared rooms at Naramata Centre, which has also been supportive of the group’s efforts.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
