Eagle and swan count commencing in North Okanagan

VERNON – Swans and eagles in the North Okanagan will be seeing a lot more people soon. The annual count of both birds gets underway this weekend.

The North Okanagan Naturalist Club is one of the participating organizations and will be sending groups to areas around Kalamalka Lake, Sicamous and Mabel Lake. The Vernon area will be covered Sunday, Jan. 17.

The numbers collected are compiled with other groups’ counts in other regions of B.C., creating a database used by universities and ornithologists. Trends in the numbers collected help provide information about the region’s ecological health.

The North Okanagan Naturalist Club are looking for additional people to joint the count. Those interested can contact coordinator Aaron Deans via email at bishopwildbird@gmail.com.
