Flood waters lap at doors of Lumby Fire Hall

UPDATE: 8 a.m. June 22

Waters in Lumby continued to rise Friday, with flooding travelling from the village's rural regions to its downtown core. Around 2 p.m. Friday, water was lapping at the doors of the Lumby fire hall, and trucks were plowing through wet roads.

UPDATE: 8 p.m. June 20

LUMBY – Fields, yards and driveways are flooding rapidly in rural Lumby, according to a local resident.

Suzanne Smith says the flooding began around 5:30 p.m. in the 360 block of Whitevale Road and is "not dissipating".

"It looks like there may be a blockage," Smith says.

City of Lumby workers and JPW Road and Bridge crews were on scene around 7 p.m., Smith says.

"Some sandbagging being carried out, too late," she says. "There are lots of people standing around in tall rubber boots trying to figure out what to do."

This isn't the first time Lumby has had issues with flooding, and both residents and the mayor, Kevin Acton, believe the regional district should be doing more to prevent it.

Vernon Fire Rescue, the Lumby fire department, JPW and the Village of Lumby could not be reached for comment.

More details will be posted as they come available.
