6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near Greek island, no reports of injuries or serious damage
ATHENS, Greece – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near the Greek island of Crete late Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the undersea quake occurred at 9:07 p.m. (1807GMT). No tsunami warning was issued.
The institute’s seismologist Efthymios Lekkas said the quake was felt on the islands of Crete, Karpathos and Rhodes.
“I would recommend that people in the affected regions remain calm,” Lekkas told state television.
Earthquakes are common in Greece and neighbouring Turkey. Lekkas said Thursday’s event occurred along a fault system that frequently produces earthquakes.
