Ecuador prosecutor won’t probe alleged funds to Correa

QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuador’s chief prosecutor’s office has decided not to investigate allegations that former President Rafael Correa accepted funds from Venezuela to destabilize the government of his successor.

In announcing its decision, authorities said Thursday that records show no indication of illegal activity.

Officials also note the prosecutor wouldn’t have jurisdiction over an issue involving Venezuela.

Anti-corruption secretary Ivan Granda delivered a complaint against Correa on Wednesday and said he was surprised prosecutors were able to determine so quickly there was no reason to suspect irregularities.

Granda alleged that the government of Nicolas Maduro funneled $281,000 through a foundation run by Correa in August to destabilize the current government of President Lenin Moreno.

Correa has been in a protracted feud with Moreno, who he accuses of betraying his “21st century socialism” platform.
