Thieves target vehicles, food and mail in the South Okanagan

SOUTH OKANAGAN – Residents in the South Okanagan continue to be victimized by thieves, who targeted everything from vehicles and tires to mail and food last week.

A Ford F350, license plate number HY2 053, was reported stolen from a Twin Lakes residence on Monday, Jan.11, Penticton RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says.The pickup truck had a fifth wheel trailer hitch mounted in the pickup bed.

More thefts from mailboxes were also reported in the Twin Lakes area last week.

On Wednesday night, Jan. 13, a man was reported in the U-Haul compound on Industrial Court, carrying a jerry can and hose. Police were called and a man was subsequently arrested and charged with break, enter and theft.

Police were called to Theo’s Restaurant at 8:45 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, where video footage revealed a man and a woman broke in and stole food items. The two were located nearby, in an intoxicated state. Police also discovered the woman was under a condition not to consume alcohol.

A 2000 white GMC Jimmy was reported stolen from a Maple Street residence in Okanagan Falls on Thursday, Jan.14. The vehicle has since been recovered.

At noon Friday, Jan. 15, Penticton Honda staff reported a man drove off on a Husquavarna dirt bike, taken from the dealership. The man was described as approximately 25 years old, Caucasian, wearing a dark hoodie and pants.

True Outdoors was struck by thieves again on Sunday night, Jan. 17. At approximately 1:30 a.m., a storage container was broken into and skis, boots, life jackets and avalanche beacons were taken.

A resident of South Main in Penticton reported theft of vehicle tires on Sunday night, Jan. 17. The resident’s 2000 Ford Freestar was discovered Monday morning, jacked up with a stump and a piece of concrete under two of the wheels and all four tires missing.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.

As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
