Court: Right-wing party can meet in pub where Hitler spoke

FRANKFURT – A court in Munich has ruled that the tavern where Adolf Hitler gave his first public speech must permit a right-wing party to hold an event.
The dpa news agency reported Thursday that the Hofbraeukeller must honour a contract with the Alternative for Germany party to hold a gathering with the party’s leader, Frauke Petry.
The owner had cancelled, citing security fears. Hundreds of protesters were arrested for blockading the party’s conference in Stuttgart in April.
The Hofbraeukeller was the venue for Hitler’s first speech on Oct. 16, 1919. It has since been used by mainstream parties including the left-leaning Social Democrats. Alternative for Germany, which wants Germany to adopt more restrictive immigration practices, is at 12 per cent in the polls.
