GM: Pollution control changes caused SUV mileage drop
DETROIT – General Motors says a change in pollution-control hardware cut the gas mileage on some 2016 SUVs, forcing it to correct figures on window stickers.
The company announced last week that the fuel economy was overstated by one-to-two miles per gallon on the 2016 GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave.
Consumer Reports magazine questioned why the 2016 mileage would be worse than the 2015 models when little was changed between model years.
GM spokesman Nick Richards says he doesn’t know why the pollution hardware was changed. But he says the SUVs from all model years comply with clean air laws.
GM told dealers to stop selling the SUVs until new stickers could be printed. The company also will find about 170,000 owners of 2016s to give them revised stickers.
