Lingering post-Katrina problem: In a food-crazy city, some have limited access to groceries
NEW ORLEANS – It’s a lingering problem in post-Katrina New Orleans: Residents and neighbourhood activists say some neighbourhoods lack easy access to full-service grocery stores and fresh food.
In the Lower 9th Ward neighbourhood, where the population was devastated by the storm, activists, local businesses and non-profit groups plan a Saturday event calling attention to the problem, complete with a temporary outdoor “pop-up” grocery store, live music and cooking demonstrations.
Meanwhile, in the hard-hit 7th Ward neighbourhood, the owner of Circle Food Store hopes to begin renovations next month. The 1930s-era store was a landmark source of fresh produce and a neighbourhood gathering place until it was flooded when Katrina hit in 2005.
