Kenneth Cole named UNAIDS international goodwill ambassador

The head of the U.N.’s AIDS-fighting organization has named fashion designer Kenneth Cole as a new international goodwill ambassador.

The appointment by UNAIDS chief Michel Sidibe comes on the eve of the U.N. General Assembly meeting on ending AIDS June 8-10.

Cole has long been involved in the global effort to end HIV and AIDS. He told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday he hopes to marry his United Nations work with the work of the amfAR foundation and its goal of finding a cure for the disease by 2020.

Cole joined amfAR’s board in 1987 where he initiated public awareness campaigns and later became chairman.
