Two-time Grey Cup champion Fred James dies, he was 71
CALGARY – Two-time Grey Cup champion Fred James has died. He was 71.
The Calgary Stampeders confirmed in a news release that James died on Wednesday but did not provide a cause of death.
James, a defensive lineman, played 112 regular-season games for the Stampeders from 1967 to 1975 and helped them win a Grey Cup in 1971.
He was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos in 1975 and won a second Grey Cup that season before retiring.
The Edmonton native was drafted by Calgary in the first round of the 1966 draft after playing at the University of Alberta.
In addition to his football career, James also worked in the insurance industry and spent time as chairman for the CFLPA’s pension plan.
