Turkish fighter jets hit PKK targets in the southeast
ISTANBUL – Turkey’s state-run agency says fighter jets have carried out a bombing run against Kurdish rebels in the country’s southeast.
Anadolu agency reported a total of 16 PKK targets were hit early Saturday in the district of Lice, including shelters and ammunition depots.
Turkish war planes periodically bomb the PKK, or the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which wants greater autonomy for Kurds living in Turkey.
The PKK routinely attacks military and police targets in southeast Turkey, where large-scale security operations to flush out Kurdish rebels have left hundreds dead, displaced entire communities and done extensive damage to urban infrastructure.
Turkey, along with its allies, the United States and the European Union, consider the PKK a terrorist group.
