Man arrested after driving off in ambulance

SANFORD, Fla. – A man was arrested in central Florida after authorities say he stole an ambulance.

Sanford police spokeswoman Bianca Gillette told the Orlando Sentinel (http://goo.gl/uvuEvL ) that the ambulance had just delivered a patient to Central Florida Regional Hospital on Tuesday when the man hopped into the driver’s seat and took off. A firefighter-EMT who had been in the back of the ambulance jumped out and was not injured.

Authorities say the man made it to an industrial area about 2 miles away before stopping at the dead end of a street.

The spokeswoman says a bystander saw the man and detained him until police arrived moments later.

The man was placed under arrest, but police didn’t immediately release his name or what charges he would face.
