Roadside bomb kills 7, including former mayor, in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A Pakistani police officer says a roadside bomb has killed seven people in the country’s northwest, including a former mayor.

Gul Fazil says the former official, Adil Khan of the Sheringal area of Dir district, was returning home Monday with six colleagues after attending a tribal council when their vehicle struck the roadside bomb near the village of Badarkani.

Fazil says the force of the blast threw the vehicle into a ditch and killed all seven.

He says Khan led a branch of the Islamic party of Jamaat-e-Islami and had travelled to the council to try to resolve a local dispute.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Roadside bombings are frequent in Pakistan’s volatile northwest. Many such attacks have been claimed by the Pakistani Taliban.
