Thousands without power in Quebec after brief wind storm

Almost 13,000 Hydro Quebec customers were without electricity late Monday following a brief but powerful wind storm earlier in the day.

The community of Roxton Falls east of Montreal appeared to bear the brunt of the storm, with trees and utility poles blown down and at least one roof ripped off.

Robert Michaud of Environment Canada says a team will visit the region in the morning to determine if the storm spawned a tornado.

Most of the storm-related power outages are in the Quebec City area, where about 4,000 customers were in the dark.

Hydro Quebec said another 3,300 customers east and southeast of Montreal were also affected.

Severe thunderstorm warnings had been posted for large areas of Quebec but they have all been cancelled.
