Police: Virginia officers shoot man approaching with knife

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk Police say an officer shot a teenager armed with a knife who charged at him when authorities went to an apartment complex for a reported stabbing.

The department said in a news release police received a report early Wednesday that a teenager had stabbed his mother. Officers say the woman escaped to a nearby apartment.

Investigators say when the officers arrived, one was confronted by a 15-year-old boy holding a knife who charged at the officer. Police say the officer backed away and told the youth to stop, but the youth continued to charge at the officer.

The department says the officer shot the youth. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The youth’s mother, who police say he stabbed, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
