Guyana to create special unit to pursue corruption cases
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Guyana’s government says it will create a special unit to crack down on corruption cases linked to the previous administration.
The announcement Monday comes as parliament prepares to vote on legislation that would authorize officials to recover property, land and other assets belonging to the government.
Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman said one case being investigated is the alleged smuggling of large quantities of gold to the U.S.
The investigations follow audits of government agencies after the main opposition party lost the general elections in May after 23 years in power. One official was recently charged with stealing $3 million and several government vehicles.
