Some Canadian police officers who have faced murder or manslaughter charges

Toronto Police Const. James Forcillo was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison for gunning down a troubled teen on an empty streetcar in July 2013.

Here’s a list of some other Canadian police officers who have faced murder or manslaughter charges. Few have been convicted:

Cargnelli and Inglis: In August 1979, Albert Johnson, a 35-year-old Jamaican immigrant to Toronto who had mental-health issues, was shot to death in his home. Toronto police officers Walter Cargnelli and William Inglis were charged with manslaughter; both were acquitted.

Cluett and O’Donnell: In July 1980, Earle Hollett died after a confrontation with police on a bridge linking Halifax and Darmouth. Constables David Cluett and Harry O’Donnell faced second-degree murder charges. Cluett was acquitted, O’Donnell was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to three years in prison after court heard he hit Hollett repeatedly while Cluett held him.

Deviney: In August 1988, diagnosed schizophrenic Lester Donaldson was shot and killed by Toronto police Const. David Deviney during a confrontation at Donaldson’s rooming house. Deviney was charged with manslaughter; he was acquitted.

Melaragni and Longpre: In December 1988, 17-year-old Michael Wade Lawson was shot in the back of the head while in a stolen car west of Toronto. Anthony Melaragni, of Peel Regional Police, was charged with second-degree murder and his colleague, Darren Longpre, was charged with aggravated assault. They were both acquitted.

Rapson: In May 1990, 17-year-old Marlon Neil was shot in the back twice while sitting in a locked car. Peel Region Const. Brian Rapson was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. He was acquitted.

Tricker: In 1992, John Rioux died after Chatham, Ont., police officer Ron Tricker and two other officers wrestled him to his dining room floor following a dispute over a speeding ticket. Tricker was convicted of manslaughter, but later acquitted on appeal.

Martin: In December 1998, 44-year-old Tony Romagnuolo was shot to death outside his home north of Toronto during a confrontation with police over the arrest of one of his teenaged children. York Region police officer Randy Martin was charged with second-degree murder. He was acquitted.

Ferguson: In October 1999 in Pincher Creek, Alta., Darren Varley was shot dead after a scuffle with police in a jail cell following his arrest on drunkenness. After two hung juries, RCMP Const. Michael Ferguson was convicted of manslaughter. Ferguson ultimately served two months in jail.

Deslauriers: In January 2014, a 17-year-old boy was shot to death by police following a short car chase in Ste-Adele, Que. Quebec Provincial Police officer Eric Deslauriers is awaiting trial on manslaughter charges. He has pleaded not guilty.
