Boston’s Newbury Street to be car-free for a day

Boston’s premier high-end retail row will become car-free, at least for a day.

The city is banning vehicle traffic on Newbury Street on August 7.

The street, which is lined with high-end shops, outdoor cafes and major retail chains, will become a pedestrian-only walkway.

Democratic Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says parking will be restricted. The public is encouraged to use public transit.

If successful, the administration has said that it might consider making the restrictions a regular occurrence.

Officials have said they’re drawing inspiration from major cities like Paris, which recently committed to closing off the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to cars for one day each month.

“Open Newbury Street” runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and covers the stretch of Newbury Street from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue.
