Turkish president, opposition drop cases against each other
ISTANBUL – Turkey’s Anadolu news agency says the president and main opposition leader have dropped lawsuits against each other.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s lawyer submitted a motion to court on Monday withdrawing all cases against the heads of two of Turkey’s three opposition parties.
Erdogan announced Friday he would drop all lawsuits against those charged with insulting him. Hundreds of ongoing cases will be affected by the decision.
In response, main opposition Republican People’s Party Chair Kemal Kilicdaroglu withdrew all cases he had filed against Erdogan.
The reciprocal withdrawing of lawsuits comes at a time of rapprochement between Turkey’s political parties following the failed coup attempt on July 15 which killed 271.
Erdogan did not drop the cases against lawmakers from Turkey’s third largest party, the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party.
