Iran says it has executed a number of Kurdish militants
TEHRAN, Iran – The official news agency for Iran’s judiciary says authorities have executed a number of Kurdish Islamic extremists convicted of armed robbery, killing civilians and planning bomb attacks.
The Tuesday report says the group was executed following a six-year trial. It did not say how many people were given the death sentence or when the verdict was reached.
It says they were from two militant groups known as Towhid and Jihad.
The report says the militants killed and injured civilians, wildlife guards and a Sunni cleric, had attacked the police and had committed armed robbery in banks and jewelry shops in western Iran.
It says the militants possessed some 50 bombs that they were planning to detonate.
Armed robbery is among the crimes that can be punished by death in Iran.
