Romania: Brancusi sculpture campaign struggles to find funds

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania’s culture minister says less than one-tenth of the public funds needed to buy a nationally treasured work by sculptor Constantin Brancusi have been raised.

Corina Suteu said on her Facebook page Tuesday that 562,000 euros ($635,000) have been donated by the public since the campaign started in March. Some 6 million euros needs to be raised by Sept. 30 when the public campaign ends.

Romania’s government will pay 5 million euros toward the 11-million-euro purchase price from private owners.

Dating to 1907 or 1908, “Wisdom of the Earth” is one of just a few Brancusi works remaining in his homeland.

The small sculpture carved from limestone depicts a female figure sitting with folded arms and her legs pulled up.
