Longtime DC police leader to serve as interim chief
WASHINGTON – A longtime deputy to District of Columbia police chief Cathy Lanier will become interim chief when Lanier leaves the job next month.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday that Peter Newsham will serve as interim chief while she searches for someone to fill the position permanently.
Newsham has been with the Metropolitan Police Department since 1989 and has been assistant chief of police since 2002.
Lanier announced last week that she was leaving after 9 1/2 years to become head of security for the National Football League. She is one of the nation’s longest-serving and most popular big-city police chiefs.
Bowser says in a statement that, like Lanier, Newsham “believes in the power of building relationships with communities as the best way to deter and solve crime.”
