Rhode Island sues to get Russian sub removed from scrapyard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island environmental officials are suing to get the hollowed-out hull of a Russian submarine removed from the site of a Providence scrapyard.

Remnants of the submarine rest mere feet from shore in Rhode Island. But the submarine isn’t a museum. It’s not a draw for divers, either. No one has touched its remains in about two years.

Its fate will likely be decided by a court.

After the Cold War, the sub in Rhode Island was sold and used as a restaurant and vodka bar and as a movie set before being turned into a floating museum.

It sank during a nor’easter in 2007 and was sold for scrap.

The scrapyard and the property owner are among those named in the lawsuit by the state Department of Environmental Management.
