TORONTO – Writers for the TV hits “Orphan Black,” “Mr. D” and “19-2” were among the winners at this year’s WGC Screenwriting Awards.
The TV, film, and digital media industry gathered Monday in Toronto for the gala, hosted by the Writers Guild of Canada.
Winners included Tony Elliott of the Space serial “Orphan Black” in the TV drama category, and Andrew De Angelis of CBC-TV’s classroom sitcom “Mr. D” in the TV comedy race.
Nicolas Billon won for his feature film adaptation, “Elephant Song,” while Melody Fox of “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour” claimed the award for children & youth.
The WGC Showrunner Award went to Bruce Smith of Bravo’s “19-2,” while the Writers Block Award for service to Canadian screenwriters went to Denis McGrath, currently a writer on CBC-TV’s “X Company.”
The Sondra Kelly Award — for a female screenwriter in mid-career — was presented to Alison Lea Bingeman.
