‘The Color Purple’ lands Jennifer Holliday on Broadway

NEW YORK – Broadway’s revival of “The Color Purple” has lured a real dream girl — Jennifer Holliday.

The Tony- and Grammy-winning singer takes over the role of Shug Avery from Heather Headley on Oct. 4. Headley took over from Jennifer Hudson at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Holliday won a Tony in “Dreamgirls” as Effie “Melody” White — belting out a memorable “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” She has appeared on TV and released her last CD in 2014, “The Song is You.”

“The Color Purple” musical is a stage version of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel set in rural Georgia that covers a lifetime of events observed by Celie, a homely, uneducated farm woman whose dreams are repeatedly shattered by the cruelty of males.
