Push for motorcycle safety reduces fatalities and injuries in the South Okanagan

PENTICTON – The South Okanagan and Similkameen were safer places to ride a motorcycle last year, with only one fatality and a couple dozen injuries.

RCMP is reporting a significant improvement in the motorcycle crash rate in the Okanagan-Similkameen for 2015, South Okanagan Traffic Services spokesperson Sgt. Harold Hallett says.

A trend of spiralling fatal and injury motorcycle crashes identified early in 2015 from the past two years continued into last spring, and South Okanagan Traffic Services worked to bring the issue to the public’s attention through an education program.

The trend was conversation in motorcycle shops throughout the region, and a proactive motorcycle skills demonstration in Penticton worked to bring awareness of the issue home to area motorcycle riders last spring.

Reserve Const. Dave Cramm, who is a motorcycle instructor, conducted roadside safety talks with many motorcyclists, resulting in an outpouring of overwhelmingly positive feedback.

In 2014 there were four fatal crashes involving motorcycles and 39 crashes resulting in injury in the South Okanagan and Similkameen.

In 2015, one person died and 28 were injured on motorcycles — a 75 per cent reduction in fatalities and a 33 per cent reduction in crashes.

Hallett says South Okanagan Traffic Services plans to continue with these safety efforts in 2016.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
