The Latest: Police arrest 14 near Milwaukee police shooting

MILWAUKEE – The Latest on arrests in Milwaukee after dozens gathered near where a black man was fatally shot by police nearly three weeks ago (all times local):

2:20 p.m.

Milwaukee police have arrested 14 people at the scene of a recent fatal police shooting and unrest on the city’s north side.

Officers dispersed a crowd that gathered in the Sherman Park neighbourhood on Tuesday night. Police say most in the crowd left peacefully, but 11 people were arrested Tuesday night for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.

Three more people were arrested Wednesday morning after police say a small group again gathered in the area and refused a resident’s request to leave her property. Three men were arrested for disorderly conduct, with one of them also arrested for resisting an officer.

A police spokesman said he didn’t know the reason for the gathering.

Sherman Park was the scene of two nights of violence after 23-year-old Sylville Smith, a black man, was fatally shot by a black officer following a traffic stop on Aug. 13.

A state lawmaker says police officers threw him to the ground and put him in handcuffs as he tried to de-escalate tensions after about 10 people were arrested at the scene of a recent fatal police shooting on Milwaukee’s north side.

Rep. Jonathan Brostoff says he was talking with members of the community in the Sherman Park neighbourhood about 10 p.m. Tuesday when he was cuffed and thrown into a police wagon. He was later released.

Police earlier arrested 10 people for disorderly conduct and resisting officers.

Police say Sherman Park residents asked officers to respond about 8 p.m. after about 30 to 40 people gathered near the area where Sylville Smith was shot and killed nearly three weeks ago. Two nights of violent unrest followed his death.
