International coalition meet at World Conservation Congress

HONOLULU – A coalition of academics, government officials and conservation groups is marking the start of an international environmentalist congress in Honolulu.

The start of the meetings of the International Coalition for the Conservation of Nature World Conservation Congress, which are being held in the U.S. for the first time, began with a Native Hawaiian ceremony on Thursday.

Government officials from around the world, including a number of heads of state, are meeting to address the complex and numerous environmental conservation issues facing the planet. Issues such as global warming, wildlife trafficking and ocean conservation are a few of the major agenda items for the congress.

On Thursday, President Barack Obama is travelling from Honolulu to one of the most remote corners of the ocean — Midway Atoll — to amplify his call for global action on environmental protection.
