Virginia inmate died 2 days after seeking medical help

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old Virginia inmate who asked for emergency medical help two days before he died.

News media outlets report that Henry Stewart filled out an emergency grievance form at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail on Aug. 4 saying he had blacked out twice in less than 24 hours and couldn’t hold down food or water. Stewart died two days later.

The form said a nurse determined his concerns “not to be an emergency.” It said Stewart had refused medication and had been evaluated by off-site specialists. Stewart’s family found the form among his belongings at the jail.

Portsmouth police say they’re investigating.

The jail said in a statement that its superintendent is waiting for the medical examiner to determine cause of death and “any speculation at this time is premature.”
